Volunteering in South Africa
|
Program Summary I just spent 2 months volunteering in a children's home in Khayelitsha, which is one of the poorest townships in South Africa. It was a rewarding, life changing and an unreal experience. Baphumelele is a Children’s Home, which houses approximately 100 children ranging in age from new born to 18 years. The word Baphumelele in Xhosa means, “Progress”. Rosie Mashale established the Home in 2001 as a care centre for abused and abandoned children. Baphumelele provides a safe haven and loving home for these children who would otherwise face a life on the streets. Unlike other Homes, Baphumelele does not discriminate against children on age or medical grounds, accepting all children who are in need. Program Details I Volunteered through Aviva, which is a leading volunteering organization in South Africa. If you are you looking for a rewarding travel experience that will give you the freedom to explore South Africa while giving some of your time to wildlife & communities in need, this is the organization to go with. Baphumelele Children's Home is not the only volunteering project you can do through Aviva. There are many other interesting projects that always need help. |
