Insite For Community Safety is an initiative of the PHS Community Services Society which co-manages InSite, North America's only Supervised Injection Facility, and whose purpose is to act as an umbrella for individuals and groups across the political spectrum who do not usually work together, but are united now to build a comprehensive, made-in-Canada drug strategy
Opened on September 21, 2003, Insite is the first supervised injection facility in North America. Insite is a clean, safe environment where users can inject their own drugs off the streets and under the supervision of nurses.
Insite is supported by a broad range of organizations and individuals including the City of Vancouver, the Province of British Columbia, Vancouver Coastal Health, Premier Gordon Campbell, Minister David Emerson, Senator Larry Campbell, Vancouver Police Chief Jamie Graham, Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan, former Vancouver Mayor Phillip Owen, injection drug users, community groups, local businesses, academic institutions and others.
Over the past three years Insite has been subject to rigorous scientific evaluation, producing over 25 peer-reviewed papers in prestigious scientific journals. The scientific data indicate Insite is meeting the following objectives:
-Reducing public injections
-Reducing overdose deaths
-Reducing the transmission of HIV and Hep C
-Reducing injection-related infections
-Improving public order
The scientific data indicates Insite is meeting these objectives
