Most of us want to live the good life.

But the good life that gets sold to us is mostly a hustle.

It plays on our vulnerabilities and our natural desire for expansion, offering an endless conveyor belt of empty promises for future satisfaction and relief if we just buy this or do that.

There is always another there.

The real good life works differently.

It begins as soon as we get clear about the most basic thing happening in our life.

Life itself.

Sounds like a fortune-cookie line.

Try it anyway.

Be aware of your thoughts for the next three seconds.

Whatever showed up, even if it was just the numbers, was the mind.

The awareness of it is life.

That is the distinction.

It is small.

It is the whole thing.

The more we stay with that awareness, the more we can use the most sophisticated instrument in the known universe instead of being used by it.

An instrument so powerful we figured out how to fly to the moon, drive around on a moon buggy, land back on Earth, and tell friends about it over dinner.

Just sayin’.

But when we lose that awareness, we are run by whatever the mind has absorbed.

Family stuff. Cultural stuff. Old wounds. Algorithms. Advertising. Insecurity. Comparison. Fear.

We think we are choosing.

Often, we are reacting.

This matters more than it used to.

Our minds are not sitting around with their own thoughts anymore. They are swimming in a constant stream of information designed to capture attention.

And the thing that captures attention most reliably is threat.

The mind evolved to notice the rustle in the bushes because the rustle used to matter.

Now the rustle is everywhere.

Every scroll is another emergency. Every headline is another alarm. Every feed is another reason to brace, compare, judge, want, fear, or despair.

Fear gets attention, so fear gets served.

A lot of people are drowning in negative thoughts and calling it being informed.

No wonder so many feel anxious.

No wonder so many feel numb.

No wonder so many feel like something is wrong and cannot quite name it.

Something is wrong.

We are living in a consequential moment. Technology is moving faster than wisdom. The climate is changing. Incentives reward the wrong things. The old stories are breaking.

We built a world of extraordinary power based on endless extraction, production, consumption, and pollution inside a finite living system.

That cannot hold.

Maybe we figure it out.

Maybe we don’t.

But improbability has always been part of the story.

This moment is not closed.

Because we are capable of awareness.

We do not have to share the fate of bacteria in a petri dish, consuming what feeds them without awareness of the limit or the ability to find another way.

With awareness we can see the edge. We can understand the living system. We can apply ourselves to protecting, regenerating, inventing, and living within what sustains us.

Not with any guarantee.

Certainty was never the deal.

The only deal is that we have this moment.

This is where the real good life starts.

Not as escape.

Not as denial.

Fully engaged.

And fully detached.

Not as a contradiction.

As freedom.

Fully engaged because we experience being part of it all.

Fully detached because we are not dependent on the outcome in order to experience the fullness of life now.

Underneath all of it, there is this simple fact:

The most phenomenal thing in life is life itself.

Out of all the vastness of space and time, here we are.

For a fleeting moment in the cosmos, life opens its eyes through us.

We get to feel sunlight on skin.

Laugh with friends.

Grieve what we love.

Stand beneath trees.

Hold children.

Stare in wonder at the stars.

Awareness does not always make life easier.

But it makes life real.

And when life is real, care comes naturally.

For ourselves.

For each other.

For the planet.

For the generations to come.

The real good life is not waiting somewhere else.

It is here, when we are here for it.

Our time in this life is brief.

However alive this experience can be, however far we can take it, let’s make it happen.

4REAL.
